Lost in translation

Email is to ole fashion correspondence as GPS is to written word guide books. The written word and story is then again cut down by the presence of the world wide web like trees in the way of NorthWest logging. Who needs to be told how to get there or what to expect or what not to miss when you have the GPS coordinates. Just plug and go. Then for those who do not have GPS the written story seems still to be lost in translation at the trailhead. Why spend time or money on maps, directions, suggested trails, directional travel ideas when you can get all that on the web. "You are here", exists no more.

I still miss getting a letter in the mail but I love email and hate buying stamps. I love guide books with their accuracy or discovering their lack of accuracy of an experience but I'm too cheap to buy one for an area I can only ride one ride as I flash through on my travels. I love the Internet but don't have a GPS so come on people remember not everyone has and or loves email. Make the story available, the whole story for free, not some teaser or require a membership fee. That too has gone by the wayside, paying for information or wifi for that matter. get up to date and get email!

Whether you love getting letters in the mail or not the other person might. Information is free and can be easy to access but don't forget to tell the whole written story not just the quick and dirty details (GPS).

The ole quote that goes something like this "this letter would be shorter if I'd had more time" applies (M. Twain I believe). Sometimes I want to wander and others I want to get to the point armored with information, tell the story.

PS I'm buying a GPS device and stamps. That way I can get to a known starting point, paint my own way and write home. BlogBooster-The most productive way for mobile blogging. BlogBooster is a multi-service blog editor for iPhone, Android, WebOs and your desktop

A few things about Orcas

Animal Life
There are no bears on Orcas! I could not believe it. This means the Mink, deer and berries flourish. The main animal life seems to be humans which run amuck and dive in cold water when the sun even thinks of popping it's shinny little head out from fog and clouds.

Other animal life to note is there is very very little biting bug action and we believe in a week we have killed the 10 or so Mosquitos that were on the island. This among the totally absent snake population has been refreshing.

Don't miss out going on a whale watching tour and do a water mammal dance before you go! The tours are good and they respect the mammals. As for seeing large water mammals via a kayak, good luck unless you go way out toward the Georgia Strait.

Other Interesting Items
Bike Pull Outs - yep you read it correctly. The island has bike pull outs for those pedalists who are in need of a break, breather, look around or a technical. These signs and their proceeding 500 FT announcements are all over the island.

As you read in the guide books, Orcas has been noted as biker friendly, since shifting was still done via the top tube. However, there are no bike lanes, shoulder to speak of and very few bike racks to be found. Nevertheless, bikers do roll off the ferry and make it safely to the Sound of their choosing which could be as far as 18 miles.

I'm sure this is all due to those wonderful bike pull outs and preceding announcements offered by the city or when missing offered in various manners by the land owner who's land looks perfect for an impromptu pull out.

I had to ask about these signs and the actual manicured pull outs. I was gleefully informed by a local of their story. The city pushed to make biking more common and safe on the island and during this push they got funding for biking safety. Well, as anyone knows from experience keeping a budget in balance, funds are often moved around and appropriated for things they were not earmarked.

The story goes that some officials kept shaving a bit off the top from the bicycle safety funds and when it came time to make accounts for the highly important biker safety something had to be made. The programs and flyers around awareness would not account for all the funding and the community would need to see more than leaflets.

All in all what surfaced were the bike pull outs all around the island because not there was not enough money for lanes or paths. The pull outs make for a good showing but my guess is they were not placed by a biker. This island is surprisingly hilly and those who bike seem to come off island with everything including the kitchen sink tied to their steed, or try and push a beach cruiser from Spund to Sound.

As a biker these signs have brought me many a joy and interesting conversation and yes I even tried on on for size. It didn't fit and made my butt look big.

Land and Sea
There is plenty to keep you busy if you choose land or Sea while visiting Orcas. Maybe even enough that you won't get it all done during your stay.

You must go up Little Summit hike in Moran Park and visit Turtle Back Mountain ( the name comes from it's shape). Then you must join Ward of Classic Day Sailing out of Deer Harbor. I suggest an evening sail. He loves the word super and he will take you on a three hour tour on his 33 ft sailboat (home). Make sure to pack snacks and wine for the trip with enough to keep your captain happy. He is not shy and loves to indulge.

Our first Island morning

The first island morning was gentle to us with no electricity, tired dogs, pacific time change, zero traffic and no where to be we slept in. Our morning greeted us with 65 degrees and fresh berries growing out our front door. With this beauty all there was to do was make coffee and plan a slow uncalculated attack on the island town.

With a late start all there was to do was drive into town, toss the dogs in the ocean, get ice cream and find a restaurant for dinner. We could not bring ourselves to walk into the island welcome center so we found a bike shop to plan our bike ride on day two.

There is very little MBT'ing on the island this time of year. The trails are closed to bikers since there are so many hikers, remember this is the time for North-westerners to play outside without rain. So does that mean the bikers get the trails when it rains? I'm surprised that Orcas gets over 200 days of sun a year.

I'm so thankful to all the people who have contributed to our trip! I keep reminding myself that we are on our honeymoon!!!! Wow, we got married.... BlogBooster-The most productive way for mobile blogging. BlogBooster is a multi-service blog editor for iPhone, Android, WebOs and your desktop

Taking the turtles to the ocean

A mountain bike ride was in order before starting the trek to get the turtles in the ocean. The NW is beautiful for mountain biking and so very different than anything I've experienced. It's also wonderful to not suck wind and have some legs. So wonderful that I actually asked to climb more today.

The riding is like being transported to another planet where land and sky dwellers yip and holler. Amazing dips and rips among bright green foliage that tugs at the laugh lines.

Today we sit in the ferry line, no not a fairy line, waiting to play amongst the San Juan Islands. Sinfully tired from play dates in Boise and biking around Mt. Baker and Bellingham we wait to load our moving home to it's next plot of land. The truck is repacked to avoid paying double for exceeding the height requirements and the dogs have plenty of wiggle room.

I am pregnant with anticipation to what Basil and brother Johnny think of the ocean. If warm enough I hope to swim with my baby beans!

Signing off so we can go walk the dogs on the beach before loading the ferry. We have plenty of time since we missed the 4pm and now wait fir the 720pm ferry. Good thing there is so much light up here in the north. BlogBooster-The most productive way for mobile blogging. Marriage begins

We are coming out of week one of marriage and driving full force into week two. Thank you to everyone for an amazing wedding! Everyone worked their tails off! The event was community sourced and community generating. Thank you thank you.

Our past week has been full of adventure, joy and honor. Everyone we have met has been so congratulating about our marriage and honeymoon adventures. Ok, we might have turned a few lips askew at a Salida Private RV Park when we pulled in with our loaded truck with a just married sign on the grill.

We proudly pulled our bodies dirtied from two days of rock climbing out of our truck and looked around. We were greeted by loud point of view bumper stickers that clearly we did not align ourselves. Other than that experience, which did make us laugh we have only heard great words.

I'll write more about where we are headed soon. I found an application that looks like it will make my updates super smooth! BlogBooster-The most productive way for mobile blogging. BlogBooster is a multi-service blog editor for iPhone, Android, WebOs and your desktop

Few days away

We are enjoying a cocktail, grilling and chilling by the Arkansas river! The river is so loud it drowns the tunes!

We hide with no phone service but Internet till our hearts are content at Arkansas river tours(ART)!

The river is our front door and the wonderful people are our welcoming party. We have had 2 wonderful days with high water on the Ark!

Will tomorrow bring more whitewater or will we hide from people up on wonderful singletrack? Who knows!

We can't wait to be married and we can't wait to spend time with our community! BUT, right now we hide in the calm of an eddy enjoying steak and grilled veggies!

See you all soon! We look forward to the madness, I'm just not sure I'm ready for it. May my guide get me through the following days with wonderful views, splashes and great views! Cheers to a portage but here is to avoiding one!

Till the river runs dry,

Madge and of course Lydia ( she is too busy planning a day of fun for us tomorrow, feet dipping in the water and sun on her shoulder)

Just like ADD travel agents off their meds....

We just got done having a wonderful couple of days with Paul and Becky in Durango. We were highly efficient on our trip and hit up SKA brewery,  planned the wedding, and rafted the Animas river at high water followed by brews on the deck of Steamworks brewery.

Now, almost 1000 miles since leaving Denver Tuesday we are officially headed out to our first river trip. Sunday we put on the Owyhee River for a 7 day trip.

Right now we are eating dinner, out of the cooler in the truck, in Provo Utah and making our way to Rome Oregon. We will camp somewhere on the way tonight and meet up with more of the group tomorrow.

This trip is going to be amazing. We are so excited and we just got asked to join another river trip after we finish the Owyhee!!!!! Wow!

After a scramble to figure out logistics of travel, change plans that were already scheduled, and dog care the second trip is a go. The catch is, we won't know which river till we take off the Owyhee on the 18th! We will have a day or so to refuel, clean up and meet the others.  Sometimes I feel like we are ADD travel agents off our medication.

Keep an eye out for our next travel update. Please know this trip is being made possible by many a friend. I'd like to thank Tiffany and Fam for taking care of our dogs, Laurie for summer long kitty lovin, the Lanci's for their river generosity and many others!!! Thank you - thank you!

P.S.  Lydia is starting to relax and settle in to not working! Getting her out of the city and a day away at the ranch was key.

P.P.S It is official, we are river sluts. We had a trip planned to get married in Iowa but as soon as the chance of an extended river trip came along we dropped Iowa like a hot potato and ran for the water! Don't worry we are still getting married in July!

The Scorching City

It's hard to believe two weeks ago it was raining with highs in the 50's...I highly prefer it over the scorch of city pavement.  I've been off work, officially, for 5 days now and I'm still struggling to get over the "jet lag" of night shift.  Madge has been wonderful working her tush off finalizing plans, tieing up loose ends, entertaining the dogs, getting a giant new tattoo...and catering to my every whim!

We are leaving tomorrow for the first leg of our journey and I am so happy, so excited, so thankful!! Without the help of my wonderful friends and community, this whole summer wouldn't be possible.  We get to live out a dream by taking 12 weeks to travel and explore together. I am very aware how rare this opportunity is.

Although Madge and I have both worked hard to make this possible, you, our dears friends whom we love, have helped make it a reality.

We love you!!

Middle Fork of the Salmon - river trip

Well, father winter just would not let up this year which means good water for us boaters but it also means we can’t do the Middle Fork of the Salmon. My posture slumps and my brow furrows like an upset 8 year old! As of yesterday we canceled the MFS trip. This is the second June river trip we have had to cancel due to conditions in the past 5 years. The last one was the Selway River in central Idaho.

To be safe we didn’t want to attempt the MFS with water levels over 6 feet and rising. We needed the water level to be between 6 - 7 and falling.  Which is currently not the case with the water levels and this is only one of the issues. The road for us to shuttle in to the put in is still under 4 to 5 feet of snow. I guess we should have planned a ski trip in June instead of a river trip.  I heard Aspen reopened due to a plethora of snow! Who would have thought?

The good news is we are still hitting the water with a great group of people it just won’t be on the MFS and it is on a river we have never done before. This trip will be more like a camping and hiking trip than a whitewater trip. This means a float trip! Well almost a float trip and it might just be what the doctor ordered to start Lydia’s summer off on the right foot.

We will hit the Owyhee River and put in near Rome Oregon. The Owyhee River is a tributary of the Snake River. It will be a mixture of green and desert. The pictures I’ve seen are amazing. I believe the section we will do is called the Lower Owyhee and should be around a 5 – 7 day trip with lots of layovers, everyone loves layover days.

Well, I better get off the computer before Lydia gets home from shopping! We have lots to do this week to get ready to leave on the trip this Friday. We plan on packing up from the big city tonight and head down to Del Norte and then over to Durango. We have a couple of fun filled days planned in Durango to finalize our wedding ceremony!!! We have had so much fun planning over email and now it is time to get all parties involved together in one place and orchestrate this puppy! I mean who needs to plan I’d be fine with drinking a beer on the river and calling us married!

Ok, I’m off for now but we will do more posting updates this week with laughs and giggles as we plan the wedding ceremony and embark on our first major trip of the summer.

PS. I hope to get Lydia blogging soon these days so you guys don't get tired of hearing from me. It is time for the adventures of Lydia.

Three new little turtles are born into this world...

Lydia is off work, Yeah! Now it is time to deal with our first point of business/pleasure before we leave Denver. A fortieth birthday present and much much more….

The Saunders ladies are strong but I’m not suggesting I put that to the test again any time soon. Needle, ink, pink skin and passion met yesterday followed by a G and T and later a handful of Advil. I might have said the Saunders ladies are strong but I didn’t say they were masochistic, a lady knows when to medicate.

For those of you who have ever spent time dreaming or designing a tattoo will understand this story and for those of you who have not, best get to working on yours! When I started looking at getting another tattoo, yes father (said in the best Star Wars voice I can muster) I’m getting another one. I thought I wanted color but every time I thought I had something these pesky little turtles started popping into my brain. So I thought, oh well turtles can be done in color; I mean tons of people have had them imprinted on their bodies. Ok to discuss that point, if you are looking into a tattoo maybe you shouldn’t Google it unless you want to change your mind. Colored turtles are gross!  Now that I may have turned you off of getting a tattoo or at least a colored turtle tattoo sit back and enjoy my tale of how I came up with my new tattoo.

In 2007, I took a trip with my Mother and Sister to Costa Rica. We have shuffled through these sands many times but this time it was different, It was just the three of us. On this trip we had a wonderful opportunity to protect and serve, baby turtles that is.

One morning, at o’my god early 30, we went down to the hatchery and met our new charges. Our job was to protect these little guys on land, from 4 foot’eds and my mothers feathered friends, until they met their new salty mother and were on their own.

This experience and the little guys won my heart. They are so darn cute as they make a mad dash for the ocean. You can’t just dump them in you have to let them struggle and march their little flippers down the beach so they know where they came from. They made tracks in the sand and in my heart.

My tattoo consists of three turtles, each one representing one of those tuff Saunders Ladies I mentioned earlier. Yep, Sorry Mom but you got to be the biggest one, followed by my older sister with me in the lead. These are in order from my shoulder down to my fingers. I placed these little guys on the underside of my arm, remember that pink skin I mentioned earlier, OUCH. This way they are always close to my body, with my mother and my sister surrounding my heart when I cross my arms or give myself a bear hug (now a turtle hug).

Thank you to all of you who contributed to my pain and suffering for my fortieth birthday present! I love them and wear them in honor. Who knows maybe someday they will have color!

The Tattoo and the Middle Fork of the Salmon

Tomorrow or later tonight I'll fill everyone in on the Tattoo and the 411 on the Middle Fork of the Salmon trip. I have bigger fish to fry right now!

Lydia is done! Done, Done, Done! I'm going to sit and watch a movie with her as we celebrate NO WORK THIS WEEKEND! That is right tomorrow is a Saturday and she doesn't have to work! Summer vacation and the beginnings of pre-honeymoon, honeymoon and post honeymoon have begone!

Ok before I use any more exclamation points I'm going to quit for now. Time to find a flick, pull up the couch and poor a vodka on the rocks (ok there were no rocks where I'm staying so I had to settle for frozen fruit!).

Enjoy your evening and wonder about the title of this blog "The Tattoo and the Middle Fork of the Salmon".

Where are you registered?

Where are you registered?

This has been a common question from people when they find out that we are getting married. I love the question and that people want to shower us with gifts. It makes me feel important and like it’s my birthday.

We'd been dragging our feet about registering. I know for some of you that is a relief and for others a reason to pull your hair out.

Well I finally realized why it was taking me so long and why in the world would I not give you people a way to memorialize this event by giving me a trinket. Hmmm, probably because even though I love each and every one of you, I'd curse your name as I had to pack up all these wonderful trinkets and awkwardly and precariously; emphasis on the latter, pack them into our storage shed.

See due to the decision to, turn our lives upside down, and send me to nursing school we were forced to make some changes. I moved down to Del Norte, away from my family, to go to school. Lydia worked extra shifts to keep up on the bills and support my lavish lifestyle. We continued this path for many many months.

When a smarter option popped into one of those floating comment boxes above our head saying rent your home, we did just that. In march we, or should I say Lydia, packed up our lives into little boxes and managed to get our life as we know it into a very very small storage shed. I then took the dogs and cats down with me to school and Lydia became a renter of a room with some friends. Nothing like feeling like your back in college, renting a room, doing laundry at a laundry mat, maintaining a long distance relationship-----oh wait I am back in college.

With our lives in boxes we realized we don’t want to do the normal wedding registry. No china, wine glasses, toasters, wine coolers and picnic baskets for us! Lydia made me say that – I’d take the wine glasses, giggles. Instead we are asking that you support our travels this summer and beyond. We know we will be in this same situation, boxes and storage sheds, for about 5 more years with our current trajectory.

If you’d like to give a wedding gift please either click on the tab at the top of this blog listed as Our Registry or go to www.madgeandlydia.zankyou.com (Nicole thanks for sending me that direction – it saved me so much time given the direction I was headed).

I look forward to seeing all the trinkets; I mean tokens of love, pile up as we expand our summer plans.

Packing!

Packing!

How long does it take to pack up a life?  No not quite it. Hmm.  How long does it take to put one life on hold, start another, put that one on hold, to start up your old new life? Ok that is closer but not quite it. I think this blog will take longer to compose than the packing itself! I need some sort of worm hole time continuum thingy to explain what I’m saying. Spock could you help me out here?

It is not easy making changes. It is not changing easy that makes the change. It is seeing how you view it that makes it easy. If you are still following this blog then follow me to the psych ward self admittance station.

Here I am packing up a life to go on the next adventure. Do you know how to pack for an unknown adventure? Apparently neither do I. However, I do have a fail safe, which according to the back of my truck, is called bring it all. Bring that pair of shorts, I’m pretty sure don’t fit any longer, that goes with that cute t-shirt. Don’t forget the camping gear, the climbing gear, winter clothes, summer clothes, the biking gear oh and definitely back the yoga mat and clothes. Pack up the kitties and the dogs.

Yep that is correct. Pack up everything you think you might want so you can’t see out the review mirror. Then toss two 11 year old cats into the cab and hope you have enough sticky rollers to make it look like they were never there for four hours and 250 miles. Oh and remember you still need room in this truck for one more person and their stuff. Yeah right. I guess I’ll be housing what I don’t need, when I figure out what I do need, in Heathers basement.

I’ll be picking up where I left off. Yet I’ll be trying not to pause what I’ve developed. I’ve been doing a lot of leaving these days. Leave my friends in Denver to create new friends in Del Norte. Oh wait change that to friend because if one of them reads this I don’t want her thinking I know she likes people. I’d hate for her to know I figured out that façade. Now I’m leaving the new friends  to go back to Denver and massage those relationships back to health. Or am I?

This is my challenge, learning how to go on to the next adventure without loosing anything/anyone. I’m planning on working with Garmin to find a way for me to avoid getting lost over these distances. It seems my relationships are determined by geographic nearness! Yikes I guess it’s time to get geographic on everyone’s ass.

Watch out! I’m coming to a stretch of highway near you! What fun do you have for us today?

There is so much more to this topic but remember I still need to pack. I must get back to my lovely Lydia who has been frozen in Carbonite while I run about the galaxy learning about medical care for humans. I hope I haven’t lost anything and the space worm thingy will get me back like we were never apart.

Dreaming

Not much time to write but I'm feeling pulled to connect.

I'm dreaming. Today I went to Salida to confirm our reception plans and menu. The food was amazing and I can't wait to see how the whole event will come together.

Salida is beautiful with the river running and the budding trees. People were walking about seemingly without a care in the world stopping to watch the frolicking kayakers in the play park.

Every car that passed had some form of toy attached, kayak, bike, raft, backpacks and of course the happy dog heads sticking out the window or over the tailgate. Spring has sprung and I’m a giddy little school girl (without the outfit and of course without a classroom).

In June we get to go on a wonderful river trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River! I’m discovering that this trip maybe harder to get on than the Grand Canyon between the water levels (too high or low) and the snow covering the transport roads. So as I say this trip is a go the trip could still go sideways but either way we are insured a wonderful time with a wonderful group of people. The scenery may end up being a different river if the Salmon is too high.

This is an area of the United States that I have not explored and I am so looking forward to doing it via the river and with a great bunch of tree loving people. There are other areas we hope to travel to this summer but the schedule is not finalized yet. If you have something you wish to tempt us with please do.

For now I must concentrate on getting Lydia done with work, the wedding plans set and focusing on the trip closest at hand.

Now I’m off to dream, in color of course, about our wedding and where we will venture on our travels. There is much climbing, rafting, hiking and lounging to be had.

Calibration of gay thinking

Yesterday my mother calibrated my thinking. Leave it to a mother to remind you that people can surprise you.

First let me say thank god for family. I know sometimes family can be a struggle but it's the simple little things that shine.

The journey to our wedding has already been a bouquet accented with colors of love, shock, dismay wrapped delicately by pure determination. Colorado does not currently recognize same sex marriage. How can you not recognize something? Is it like seeing someone at a party you don't remember and just know you should or is it like agnosia where the words just make no sense after a traumatic brain injury? How can people not recognize love and honor when they see it? Ok best get to my point before I fall off my soap box and hurt an ankle.

Sometimes we live in the world through the view of the majority even when we say we are bucking the system. At a gallery showing, my mother didn't keep her eye on the displayed art work. Instead she had her own work of art she wished to proudly display, ME. My mother had brought the save the date card for my wedding and was presenting to her fiends just like the paintings displayed with an untouchable price tag. She wore her child on her sleeve for all to see. It was amazing to watch my mother as I kept stuffing the yikes I'm gay and my mom is telling, no yelling to, her friends and people we don't know. What will they think? I believe I was embarrassed not only because I was gay but because I was in the spot light. It's hot under the spot light.

As I chilled and watched my mother hummingbird do her thing I giggled at my own gay thinking. How lame to worry or keep the momma hummingbird from flashing her brilliant colors.

In an instant I was the one who was proud, of my mother and sister flashing their colors around with no worries of what people would think. A friend said oh share that beautiful card with Connie.

Connie loved the card and congratulated us. She then says that she her self never had a drive to marry. That she and her partner probably never will. Ah, in an instant I found my self looking down from my soap box. The words just flitted out of my mouth, I believe we all need to stand up and be counted. We, me and my gay friends in my pocket, deserve to be treated as any other person. So on one hand I believe we all need to stand and beat our colorful wings it still needs to be right for the person.

I say hats off to all those mothers, daughters, brother and fathers who have displayed their family colors for all to see. Each contact we have is an opportunity for calibration even when it might be you being calibrated.

Pinch Me

Wow, school is out! No time to gather myself. We are less than 60 days away from our wedding. That means everything that I've pushed off because I was in school has to happen yesterday.

My mind is spinning so fast, hard to slow down enough to let the thoughts drop to form sentences. I can't believe what has transpired since August. I'm half way through my two year plan to get a nursing degree.

I've spent way too much time away from my honey and my community. In August I moved down to Del Norte to attend school in Alamosa. In March we brought the dogs and the cats down to live with me so we could consolidate and save some money by renting out our home. Lydia has been a champ living alone in Denver, working and being without us. Her community has been amazing. I don't know if we could have taken this adventure on without our community.

Lydia and I are over it, to say it lightly, about our times away from each other. The past two years have been a whirlwind with my work schedule, school and then moving away from Denver. Enough talk about all that!

We are so excited to share our adventures with you all and look forward to our summer. Get this, we are traveling the whole summer together! Just us, the dogs, bikes, raft, climbing gear and the open road! So by the end of the summer, after spending 24 7 together, we might be ready for my last two semesters of seeing each other part time (doubt it). Know that when I say "just us" that also includes the us that is our community. Come on out and play with us!

It all starts June 1st when I run up to Denver and steal Lydia away from work. Until then I guess I'll plan the wedding details. I'm sure I'll find things to keep me over busy now that I'm out of school. Right now I'm getting in some mom and sis time in lovely Santa Fe. Soon I'm off to Denver to see Bono! Yippie can't wait (Oups was that out loud?). Oh and of course my honey.

We will do our best to keep you all, our beloved community, informed about our adventures. I'm sure there will be opportunities to meet up and play together. I'll get something out on the blog and share what we have planned for our summer honeymoon travels. I like the way that sounds.

Hope to see you all soon!

Welcome!

Welcom to Madge and Lydia's wedding blog!! We'll be posting information, updates, and news regarding our July 16, 2011 wedding! We're so excited for this day!
